Your site’s passwords file is public
Your site keeps its secret settings in a file called .env, and anyone can download it. It holds the password to the database where appointment requests are stored, and the password to your email account. With it, someone can read or delete patient messages without ever logging in.
GET https://old-clinic.example/.env
HTTP/2 200
content-type: text/plain
content-length: 1214
APP_ENV=production
DB_HOST=localhost
DB_USER=steli_wp
DB_PASSWORD=•••••••• (hidden)
SMTP_PASSWORD=•••••••• (hidden)
We read the first lines to confirm, hid every value and stored nothing.
How to fix it: Block or delete the .env file in the public folder today, then change every password it contained: database, email and any API keys.
